Australian Young Libertarians is the youth wing for young Australians who believe peaceful people should be free to speak, own, build, trade, associate, innovate, take risks, help others and live with responsibility. We are united by a simple idea: society belongs to individuals and communities, not to politicians, bureaucrats or pressure groups.
We start with the individual. No one’s life should be directed by distant decision-makers who have never met them and cannot know their particular circumstances; financed by resources taken from people who never agreed to that specific use; or governed by institutions that face no real rivals to expose failures and force improvement.
A free country is built from the bottom up: by people, families, businesses, charities, clubs, churches, mutual aid networks, local communities and voluntary exchange. Public power should be restrained, accountable, decentralised and treated as a last resort, not the first answer.
Economic freedom
- Free markets, free exchange, sound money and real consumer choice
- Lower taxes, less waste, fewer barriers and a smaller political class
- Secure private property, contract, saving, investment, entrepreneurship and innovation
- Opportunity created by individuals, founders, workers, families and communities, not bureaucracy
Civil liberty
- Freedom of speech, conscience, association, privacy and peaceful disagreement
- Self-ownership, individual rights, personal responsibility and equal treatment under the law
- Civil society, voluntary action, charity, community and mutual aid over state dependency
- Tolerance, pluralism and open debate without censorship or state-enforced conformity
Limited power
- Political power should be limited, transparent, accountable and constantly questioned
- Clear rules, due process, impartial courts and protection from arbitrary authority
- Decentralised decision-making, competitive federalism and the right to opt out where possible
- Institutions, rights and norms that restrain coercion and protect peaceful people from domination
Open Australia
- Free trade in goods, services, capital, ideas, technology and culture
- Peaceful cooperation, voluntary exchange and friendship with the world
- Individual liberty, property rights and responsible engagement without nation-building or central planning
- An outward-looking country confident in freedom, enterprise, civil society and human dignity
